Enter the Worship Circle
June 14, 2005
A good friend introduced me to the “Enter the Worship Circle” recordings recently, and I’m completely hooked. Some of the albums were done “live” (in the studio, not at a performance) and in one pass, so there are a few imperfections here and there, but that just serves to make the experience richer. Artists include Ben Pasley, 100 Portraits, Waterdeep, and others. You may recognize some of the songs if you attend praise & worship services as opposed to a more traditional hymn-driven service. Many of the songs are original, and all are based on scripture.
My favorite so far is “Lost Art of Living” from Second Circle— the lyrics are deeply affecting, and the more experimental musical style is simply haunting. The Village Thrift: Circa 2005 album is edgier and more urban in style. There’s more bass accompanying the audio samples and rap-style vocals on “How Sweet” while “Strong Weakness” is a quieter acoustic song with thought-provoking lyrics. The rest of the album is a bit more “restrained” (I mean that in the best sense of the word, not the worst), but there are little surprises waiting on every track— you’re not going to get what you expect, but you’ll enjoy it.
These albums are unlike any I’ve ever heard, and I haven’t stopped playing them since I received the package last week. You can find a secure online store at EntertheWorshipCircle.com; right now they’re offering free shipping. The prices are great too—each full-length CD is $11.98 or less. Unfortunately there aren’t any music samples on the site, but you can get an idea of what to expect with Big Time Audio Bazaar, Vol. 1. It features recordings from the Enter the Worship Circle albums, as well as several other independent artists associated with the label. If you’re “brave” I highly recommend picking up First Circle, Second Circle, and Third Circle; if you’re looking for something really new and different, Village Thrift: Circa 2005 won’t disappoint.
