Palm Announces Two New Handhelds: Tungsten C and Zire 71

April 24, 2003

Wow! If you haven’t heard the news yet, you’re really missing out. Here are the specs on the new models announced by Palm SG just yesterday. I’ll try to get my hands on them just as soon as I can so I can do full reviews.

Zire 71

This handheld is the general consumer’s dream. Almost everything you can possibly imagine in a handheld, in an amazingly compact unit. It’s a Palm OS 5.2 device with 16MB of memory and a 320 x 320 hi res screen. It’s also the first truly “multimedia” handheld from Palm SG, for several reasons. First, it is the first handheld from Palm to integrate a digital camera (though of course Sony has released several models with a camera). It also includes Kinoma Player and Kinoma Producer, so you can play movie clips on your handheld and even convert some of your desktop movie clips as well. The Zire 71 can also play MP3s and has a joystick-like mavigation button on the front that will likely be great for gaming—offering a nice mix of entertainment possibilities in one small device. The suggested retail price for the Zire 71 is $299.

Tungsten C

This new handheld is aimed squarely at corporate users and has an incredible feature set—perhaps the best I’ve ever seen on a Palm OS device. It also runs Palm OS 5.2, and has an amazing 64MB of onboard memory and a 400 MHz processor for blazing fast performance. There’s also a 320 x 320 hi res screen, an integrated keyboard, and the first time ever in a Palm OS device, integrated Wi Fi support, with VPN support and enhanced security options. A very nice selection of third party software is included with the device, including Documents To Go, PrintBoy, CopyTalk, VersaMail, and several other applications. I’m especially excited about this one, since it sets so many new benchmarks for the Palm OS— more memory, more feature, more software, more of everything that helps to make people more productive at work. The suggested retail price for the Tungsten C is $499.
