Mapopolis Launches GPS for Handspring Treo

April 21, 2003

This is exciting news indeed! Smartphone users are sometimes left out of the loop when it comes to accessories and such. Now those who like to have the general all-in-one convenience of a phone/PDA combo unit are now able to use a GPS device as well. Perfect for road warriors and frequent travelers. I don’t have a Treo, so I won’t be able to test this one out, but wanted to pass the news along to those of you who might like to take advantage of it. Full release follows:

Cleveland, OH; April 19th, 2003 – Mapopolis.Com, the leading developer of navigation software for Palm OS and Pocket PC handhelds announced today the immediate availability of the Mapopolis GPS for Handspring Treo handhelds. The new GPS unit has been available for purchase now for two weeks and has received praise from numerous users. The unit comes with a special version of Mapopolis for Handspring Treo handhelds.

Until this release, Treo users were unable to use GPS with their handhelds. Even splicing a cable together wouldn’t work as no software supported the Treo’s unique configuration requirements. The Treo GPS joins Mapopolis’s existing family of GPS units which provide support for virtually every PDA on the market, including Palm Tungsten-series handhelds, Pocket PC Phone handhelds and the Dell Axim.

“Our users own a wide variety of handhelds and our goal to provide GPS solutions for every handheld that our users want to use our software with,” said Mapopolis Vice President Jeremy Straub, “this latest addition is another step closer to our goal.”

Mapopolis GPS hardware solutions featuring Mapopolis Navigator for Pocket PC handhelds and Mapopolis Platinum +GPS for Palm OS handhelds are available from many retailers including PC Mall and Mobile Planet.

Founded in 1999, Mapopolis.Com, Inc. has become the technology leader in mapping and navigation software for PDAs and other portable devices. Building upon the original release of Mapopolis for PalmOS in 1999 which was limited to locating streets and intersections, the company has expanded to offer a full line of products which provide dynamic navigation rivaling expensive in-car systems. Mapopolis customers include General Electric Interlogix, Police & Fire departments, the United States Probation Office and hundreds of thousands of consumers nation-wide. Customers use Mapopolis on their PocketPC, PalmOS or RIM/Blackberry device to find addresses, generate directions and provide “heads-up” dynamic navigation.
