Need Help Getting Movie Plot Information in Showtimes?

February 4, 2003

Assuming you already have Showtimes, and just need the update, backup your Showtimes directory FIRST and then do this:

  • 1. Get the latest PRC files from the showtimes site at:

    http://showtimes.jrray.org/

The proper link will be fairly close to the top, next to this text “Recently download and the date is showing the wrong year? Update your Showtimes.prc. Beware: this link will not work with Mozilla, I had to use IE to get the file.

  • 2. Get this file from my site:

    patch file.

Open the directory for your platform, and install the files in that directory to your Showtimes directory (overwriting the older ones). For me, that was getdata.pl and the Yahoo.pm script file.

  • 3. Assuming you have Windows, create a shortcut to your desktop and right click to change the properties to add “-f -r” without the quotes to the end of the line. On my Windows XP box, that looks like this:

    “C:\Program Files\Showtimes05\getdata.pl” -f -r

or if you normally run the Perl script from a command line, add those two switches to the end.

  • 4. Doubleclick and go get some coffee— the first time you run Showtimes, it will take forever because it is doing a complete new download. After the first time, you can take off the “-r” switch and it should go faster.

  • 5. Say a silent word of thanks to Ken Poole for getting movie plots working for all of us Showtimes lovers!
