HoliDates 2.01

One of the things that many Palm OS device users often ask about is an easy way to add holidays to their calendar. If you Outlook, that’s pretty simple, but what if you prefer the Palm Desktop? A few enterprising souls have created archives files to add holidays, but installation can be cumbersome, and there’s no choice involved in which holidays get added. Enter HoliDates, a Palm OS application guaranteed to end your holiday woes— at least until 2007.

TextPlus for Palm OS

Graffiti is a great tool for text entry on a Palm OS device, but when you’re in a hurry or have a lot to say, it can be something of a drag to laboriously form each letter in the Graffiti area. With TextPlus, you don’t have to do that anymore—or at least not as much.

PDACookbook Plus

Some of my friends and family may think that I am entirely unqualified to review a cookbook program, having tasted some of my “creations”—but when Wakefield Software offered the chance to use this product I simply couldn’t refuse. And while it may not have helped me at all in the kitchen beyond getting me more organized, that is at least a step in the right direction…

Wassup!

Though that phrase has a relatively short life in our American popular culture, it is still very appropriate in some contexts. Like when you turn to your handheld device for a quick look at what the day holds. Pocket PCs have something similar built in with the Today screen, but until now Palm OS devices didn’t have anything similar. Fortunately Wassup is here to save the day.

Pocket TV Browser for Palm OS and Pocket PC

I’m warning you now: I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a piece of handheld software in a very long time, and it’s certainly going to show in this article! I’m the first to admit that I watch way too much TV, and I’ve always been annoyed at the lack of a really good “TV Guide” type of program for either the Palm OS or the Pocket PC. And now I have both, thanks to Pocket TV Browser.

SplashPhoto

SplashData Week continues with a review of SplashPhoto, an application that lets you view photos on your Palm OS handheld. It makes sense too- if your handheld can be used to keep track of personal information like bank account numbers and passwords, it should also let you share your photos with others. Especially digital photos— why go through the hassle of printing all of them in order to enjoy them on the go? SplashPhoto takes care of everything for you.

SplashID

One of the first things people usually ask about when they get a handheld is what sort of program they can use to keep their ATM passwords, credit card numbers, and calling card access codes safe. People generally like the idea of having all of that sort of information in one convenient place, but they’re usually worried about both security and organization. Fortunately there’s a company out there that’s dedicated to helping people keep track of things like that, along with some other cool ideas. That company is SplashData, and this week we’re going to be taking a closer look at all of the applications they offer, along with an interview with the company president later in the week. So if you have all sorts of information you’d like to keep handy, along with some photos, shopping lists, and a checkbook register you can never seem to balance, stay tuned— this week is for you here at PocketGoddess.com. And if you haven’t registered yet, do so now— members are eligible to win some great prizes, courtesy of our friends at SplashData!

Goblin Bane

Remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books from when you were a kid? You know the ones— you read a bit, and then you came to a point where you had to make a decision, going to one page or another somewhere else in the book to continue the story. The same concept has finally come to Palm OS handhelds, in the form of Goblin Bane from Combat Disk and Interactive E Books.

Aldon's Crossing

Seems that all I’ve been doing lately is playing games, but believe me I’m not complaining! The latest one I’ve been spending far too much time on is Aldon’s Crossing, from Constant Games. Monopoly for Palm OS

HandMark has done it again! The latest addition to their lineup of classic games for the Palm OS (the first was Scrabble) is Monopoly, the ever-popular game of capitalism and real estate development. Thing is, it’s pretty hard to grab three other friends to play a few rounds in today’s increasingly mobile society, and I don’t have enough captive family members to play either. I’ve missed playing Monopoly, but now I can play whenever I like by virtue of having an incredibly faithful version of one of my old favorites on my Palm m505.

Shadow Plan

I’ve been firmly entrenched in “Camp Bonsai” for quite a while now—it’s a superb application from Natara Software. It’s also one of the reasons that I simply couldn’t switch to a Pocket PC a while back, even when faced with a better screen, integrated voice recording, etc. But there’s a new kid on the block that has lured me away from Bonsai, and that kid is Shadow Plan.

ActionNames Datebook 5

My favorite application for the Palm OS, ActionNamesDatebook (I’ll call it AN from here on out) just got better. Today iambic released version 5.0, and it’s a knockout. Some of the new features are almost expected, including large font support, while others are revolutionary, such as the new contact history. But whatever you’re looking for in a Datebook/Address/To Do replacement, you’ll probably find it here.

Crystal Quest

Sometimes it isn’t the fancy graphics and sound effects that make a game memorable—sometimes it’s the nostalgia. I sometimes wax poetic about the glories of Kaboom and Circus on the Atari 2600… oops sorry, wrong platform. Today I’m talking about Crystal Quest, a game with which I wasted far too many hours while I was in college all those years ago. Now that I’m in grad school, I’m wasting time with Crystal Quest for both the Palm OS and Pocket PC platforms.

Shanghai

I’ve been playing another new game recently called Shanghai, and I must admit that I’m totally hooked! You may be thinking that it’s just another MahJongg clone, and you’d be partially right, but this game is a lot better than anything else I’ve seen on a handheld platform. Even better, it’s available for both the Palm OS and Pocket PC, so matter what kind of device you have you can still join in on the fun.
