Interview: Emily Sessions of Technocutie

June 16, 2006

Thanks for agreeing to talk with me. Please tell me a bit more about yourself.

I’m in my twenties, a semi-recent transplant to New York City where I live with my fiancee and two cats. I work at an art gallery during the day, and when I’m not working or sewing, I like to watch movies and try different foods and go to museums and ride my bike around the city!

How did your company get started? Are you a designer first and technology queen second, or is it the other way around?
I’ve been working with both crafts and technology as long as I can remember. My mom taught me to make my own clothes and my dad taught me how to write a computer program, both before I could write in cursive or cross the street by myself. I’ve always felt electronics have a personality, and when I got my iPod I knew it had to have a handcrafted outfit. I enjoyed making it so much that I decided to try to make a business out of it. That was over a year ago, and technocutie is getting more and more acclaim and wonderful, loyal customers every month!

I think handcrafted iPod accessories are important to me because the music that you listen to is such a reflection of your inner emotional life. It seems natural to want something that reflects that aspect of yourself onto the device that you listen to that music on.

Being the PocketGoddess myself, I’m very intrigued by the Technocutie name. Is there a story associated with the name?

I don’t remember how I thought of it! I knew I wanted something that incorporated the technology aspect of what I was doing and the handcrafted, playful nature of my designs. I really wanted a name that sounded fun, because I felt the world needed more cute, happy iPod accessories.

How do you come up with your designs?

I have a big box full of different colors of fabric and buttons, and I’ll often play with that to see different combinations. Color is so expressive to me, I feel like when I get the right set of colors, the rest of the case falls into place.

Do you make your own products, or do you have a sewing team?

Everything that comes out of technocutie is completely done by me. So I design the cases, buy, measure, and cut the material, sew the cases myself, check their sizing, wrap them, and ship them off. Every technocutie product is a real labor of love to me, and I love being involved in every step of the process.

When I got my review cases, I was surprised and delighted to find them all wrapped up in cool black & white checkered paper, with colorful star stickers. Do you do that for everyone, or just reviewers?

I wrap everyone’s cases in paper…I always get excited when I get a package, like it’s Christmas time, and I figured I’d play up that sense of excitement a little for my customers!

Are you planning to offer other products in the future, like PDA or mobile phone cases?

I definitely want to offer a wider range of products…I’m experimenting with designs of mobile phone cases and pouches that can hold different electronics.

Can you offer a sneak peek at upcoming products?

I’m working hard on a line of laptop bags right now—that’s another area that I think needs products with more personality and fun!

Thanks again for doing this interview. I look forward to seeing what comes next from Technocutie!

Ok, this is going to sound really weird, and it has nothing to do with technocutie.
I typed in my name on the internet and your site technocutie came up, with Emily Sessions on it. I was stunned that someone actually has the same name as me! This is trully not a joke!
Emily, it would be so neat if you could email me sometime.
Have a great day!
