Sumo Week: Ladies Wallet
December 23, 2005
The Ladies Wallet is a nice addition to the Sumo Cases line, and I really appreciate the fact that it matches some of the other products in the line, Being a fashionable female “gadget geek” is hard sometimes, so it’s nice to have a more stylish alternative than basic black. The Sumo Ladies Wallet is made of the same top grain leather as their other products, and the details and workmanship are very good indeed. The closure on the wallet is different from anything else I’ve seen; a leather tab fits through the metal loop on the front of the wallet. To open, just pull down the tab and pull up the flap. The closure took some getting used to at first, since most wallets have either a zip or snap closure, but the more I use it the more I like it. It isn’t difficult to line up, as snaps can be, and it is very secure yet easy to open.
Inside you’ll find that signature black Sumo lining just under the flap, while the card slots and checkbook cover are all made of the same high quality leather as the exterior. The top of the wallet has a nice deep compartment perfect for a thin calendar or address book, or a whole pile of receipts. There are also eight card slots that are sized just right—enough of the top of each card is exposed to allow you to identify and grasp it easily. The lower half of the wallet has an integrated checkbook cover that cannot be removed. There is another slot on the front of the checkbook cover, as well as five more card slots. The first card slot on the left is designed to hold your ID and has a clear window covered by a leather privacy flap. Flip up the checkbook cover and you’ll find a hidden zipper slot where you can stash folded bills, stamps, etc. Behind the checkbook is another compartment that is mostly secured by a zipper; since the edges are left open this area isn’t a good place to stash loose change, but it will work for receipts, papers, a small monthly calendar, a comb, etc.

I like the overall style of the wallet, but would make a few changes in future products. It would be nice if the checkbook cover were removable for quick errands, since you can get by with nothing else for a trip to the store, as it holds several cards and has a zipper compartment in the back. I would also like to see a zippered pocket on the outside of the wallet that would provide quick access for bills and loose change, so that you don’t have to open up the wallet entirely just to pay a parking meter or grab something from the soda machine. Those minor quibbles aside, the Sumo Ladies Wallet is a nice choice, and the price isn’t too painful at $55.00. You can get one in your choice of red or black at the Sumo Cases web site after the first of the year.
