StylusCentral Week: Aluminum Case for Apple iPod
July 13, 2005

If you’re pretty hard on your mobile electronics, then you probably already know that aluminum hard cases offer the best protection you can buy for your handheld devices. The Aluminum Case for 4th generation iPods is ultra-protective without adding a lot of weight or bulk to your music player. At first glance you’ll see that the screen of the iPod is protected by a transparent piece of plastic inset into the case in just the right spot, while the click wheel is left open and uncovered so you can easily use your iPod while it’s in the case. The top of the iPod is left almost completely open, so you shouldn’t have any worries about using an iTrip FM transmitter or any other accessories that plug into the top of the iPod. There’s also an opening at the bottom of the case that allows you to charge and sync your iPod with a cable. On the back of the case there’s a removable metal screw that serves as an attachment point for the optional belt clip, as well as a small cutout close to the bottom of the case that may have you baffled at first— but I’ll explain later.
The case opens from the top, with a very sturdy hinge at the bottom. Just pull on the front of the case at the top and it will come apart fairly easily, though I don’t think you should have any worries about it coming open accidentally. Even if it did, your iPod most definitely won’t come out— the Neoprene lining on the bottom grips the device quite tightly. The case is also lined on the front flap as well, so there’s no concern about your iPod getting scratched. There’s no sliding around here either, the case is perfectly fitted to the iPod—you can see just what I mean from the picture below. That little opening at the back I mentioned a minute ago is a finger opening so that you can press out the iPod when you want to remove it from the case. With that opening it isn’t difficult at all, but without it you would have quite a struggle on your hands!

All of the cutouts make it easy to use and enjoy the iPod while it’s in the case, though I do wish that some sort of soft membrane could have been integrated into the click wheel area for even better protection against cosmetic damage to the player. As it is, aluminum does provide the best coverage you can get, and the prices at StylusCentral are very reasonable. You can get this 4th gen case for the sale price of $26.99 (regularly $29.99) and there are 3rd gen and iPod mini versions available as well. You can check them all out and buy one at the StylusCentral online store.
