Brando Week: Leather Case for the Sony PSP

July 25, 2005

This case is designed as a “play through” accessory, meaning that you can play games/watch movies on the PSP without removing it from the case. The exterior is made of genuine leather with white stitching and it features a magnetic clasp. A separate wrist strap is included; attach it to the lanyard hole on the bottom left side of the PSP, instead of directly to the case. Inside the case you’ll find an all-black leather interior and a plastic bracket that holds the PSP in the case. Under the lid are several storage pockets, including three for UMD discs and two Memory Stick Pro Duo slots. Unfortunately the UMD slots are extremely tight, and it’s rather difficult to insert and remove discs from those pockets. The MS Pro Duo slots fared a bit better in testing, since they held the small memory cards firmly but not too tightly. I wouldn’t suggest actually storing anything under the lid though, as there’s no divider to protect the delicate screen of the PSP from getting scratched or chipped.

The PSP attachment bracket is quite secure and easy to use. It does a good job of holding the PSP in the case, and I didn’t have any problems with my PSP coming loose. You can even change UMDs while the PSP is still attached to the case, which is a really nice feature. It’s a little tricky to pull out the UMD, since the door doesn’t have enough room to open fully, but it is possible with a little patience. Putting discs in is much easier than taking them out.

The Brando Leather Case for the Sony PSP is nice looking and made of good quality materials, but I don’t believe it does a great job of actually protecting the PSP from damage. The sides of the case are left open, and there’s no divider between the screen of the device and the storage slots under the lid. It’s also rather bulkier than other leather cases I’ve seen for the PSP, since the plastic attachment bracket is purposefully a little higher than it needs to be in order to allow UMD discs to be changed without removing the PSP from the case. You can get one for $32 from the Brando WorkShop web site.
