PSP Video

May 5, 2005

If you have a Sony PSP, you probably want to do more with it than just play games; after all, it’s an MP3 player, a photo viewer, and a video player as well. You may have been a bit put off by video at first, since your only options were to pay too much for movies on UMD (they cost more than DVDs, and don’t have all the extras!) or to download converter software from the Internet, buy a USB cable, rip DVDs, convert them, install them to your PSP, etc.

That’s just too much work for the PocketGoddess, so I’m very glad to see that PSP video doesn’t have to be that hard— or that expensive. Several sites are popping up all over the web, offering preformatted video content. All you have to do is download, unzip, and use a memory card reader or a USB cable to transfer all that video goodness to your PSP.

You should probably start with the official Sony PSP Video site since it has video tutorials and video clips. There’s also a mailing list you can join to get updates when new video content is available. There’s a nice mix there, with clips from ABC News, movie trailers, sports video, nature clips, and a full episode of Speed Racer. You can find it at http://psp.connect.com/

Here are a few sites I’ve found so far:

I’ll update this list as I find more PSP video sites. Another option is to record television programs and DVDs straight from your TV, with no computer intervention required. If this sounds interesting to you, head on over to Lik-Sang to read more about the VRX02 Direct Recorder coming from RockRidgeSound in July. It’s available only as an import for $179, but it sounds very promising.
