Dilbert Dose-A-Day from Dataviz

May 4, 2004

Dose-A-Day is like a calendar for your handheld, with a very important twist. Instead of telling you where to go and what to do, it offers a light-hearted break from your busy day. I’ve been having a lot of fun with the Dilbert version for a couple of months now, and it never fails to make me laugh. Sometimes I feel as though Scott Adams has been sitting in on some of my corporate sales meetings, but I digress.

With Dose-A-Day you get a new comic or feature each day. There are currently three different versions available: Dilbert, Golf by Gary McCord, and Close To Home. Once installed on your device, it doesn’t take much room at all. The viewer application requires only 56K, and each of the cartoons is about 90K. You can control how many of them are synced to your device; the default is five days before the current date and five days after. That ensures that you have a continuous stream of new content over weekends, during vacations, and on business trips. The display options are also nice, providing choices about whether you want Dose-A-Day to display each day at a certain time, at the first powerup, or never. You can also choose to save your favorite comics for later viewing, so that you’ll be able to read them again and laugh all over again.

Dose-A-Day is one of those applications that I wish I had thought of— simple and very fun. It’s a good deal too, at $19.99 for a full year of content. You can start any time, no need to wait until January 1. Versions are available for Palm OS and Pocket PC devices. Everything works perfectly on my Tapwave Zodiac; the only reason Dilbert Dose-A-Day doesn’t get a perfect score is the fact that the high res+ 320x480 screen isn’t supported. That means that owners of cutting edge devices will have to scroll to see the entire comic, just like those with 160x160 and 320x320 screens. That’s a small price to pay though, when you’re laughing and enjoying your daily dose of Dilbert. You can get it via CD or download from the Dataviz web site.
