Robot Panic 2.0

April 20, 2004

Robot Panic is an arcade game for Palm OS devices with three levels of play: Easy, Hard and Panic mode. I find even easy mode to be something of a challenge, because you have to work very fast in this game. The object is to ensure that all of the robots making their way along the conveyor belt to the inspector have all of the right parts. You use your stylus to run along the top of the screen releasing the needed parts at the right moment— left arms, right arms, and heads. If they aren’t complete by the time they reach the end of the line, you’ll lose a life. This game is fast, even on Easy mode, and I haven’t quite worked up the courage to try Panic mode yet.

There are some nice little extras, such as the ability for your character to take a “nap” if he’s caught up on all his work. There are some powerups too, if you can catch them when they come off of the conveyor belt at the top of the screen. Some of them give you extra points, or either slow down the game or speed it up (if you miss your catch). And if you need any encouragement, the high score list (from which my name is painfully absent) is always at the bottom of the screen (if you have a hi res + device).

The game graphics are very good, in high resolution if your device happens to be 320x320. Hi Res + 320x480 graphics are also supported, and the game looks great in widescreen mode on my Zodiac. The sound effects are appropriate, though I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed. They’re of the “bleep” and “bloop” variety, and let you know when you’ve successfuly attached a part to a robot or have missed. The game preferences are nicely done, optionally providing support for the hard keys on your device as well as vibration on the Tapwave Zodiac. You can also control the sound effects volume, or mute them completely.

If you like the idea of a little frenetic fun on your Palm OS 3.0 or higher device, this game might be a good choice. Robot Panic 2.0 requires 300K of space on your Palm OS device and costs $12.95. For a free trial or online purchase, visit the CrazySoft web site.
