StickIt II

April 30, 2004

Like the idea of Bugme! from Electric Pocket, but don’t really like the idea of spending $19.95? Then you might want to take a look at StickIt II from GlobalSync. The main screen shows a listing of the notes you’ve already created, and starting a new one is as simple as tapping on the “New” button at the bottom of the screen. The Draw screen is very clean and easy to understand. Drawing tools are on the right, offering four brush thicknesses, an eraser, and a color chooser. There’s a comment field close to the bottom so that you can add a name for your note, and icons at the bottom edge of the screen for a variety of functions. The right and left arrows allow you to scroll through your notes quickly, and the blank piece of paper icon duplicates the current note. The strange-looking green lightbulb is what you tap to create a new note, and the trash can icon deletes the current note. Next is the Beam icon, followed by the Easel that represents the slideshow feature. Next is the Alert icon that allows you to set a custom alarm for your note, choosing the exact day and time.

This application is made more powerful by the simple little arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen. Tap that and your screen will shift up to reveal an entire screen full of blank memo lines. That means that you can use the drawing part of the note to quickly sketch/draw a map to the party on Friday night, and use the note field to capture more detailed directions. That way you don’t have to worry about missing out because you turned on “Elk” street instead of “Elm.” This would also be great for taking notes in a class or lecture— I love using my Zodiac and a keyboard instead of paper, but what happens when the instructor starts drawing charts and diagrams? Instead of having to scramble to find pen and paper, you can use your stylus to capture them on your Palm OS handheld and then add the relevant notes at the bottom so you’ll be able to make sense of it later.

The budding cartoonists out there will be glad to know that a slideshow feature is also included, and it’s a lot of fun. I won’t bore (or scare!) any of you with my lack of drawing ability, but I did want to let you know about it. You can create any number of notes and then tap the slideshow button to create a slideshow or cartoon. I’ll bet this would also be a fun way to entertain the kids, either by letting them create their own or by displaying your own drawing talents.

I was lucky enough to take an early peek at this app, and I really like it. StickIt II is certainly a good value at only $9.95. It doesn’t have every bell and whistle under the sun, but if you’re just looking for an application to take quick handwritten notes and set alarms, you’ll find that StickIt II may just do everything you need. For a free trial or online purchase, visit the GlobalSync web site next week.
