Reverces from Handy Entertainment

January 27, 2004

If you’ve ever played Othello, then you already know how to play Reverces. That doesn’t mean that you can’t learn a thing or two from this game, because it offers five different difficulty levels, from Novice to Expert. You can also choose to see all of the legal moves, denoted by a plus sign in the proper squares. That makes Reverces a good choice whether you’re just learning the game or perfecting your strategy. You can also choose to play either against the computer or another human, though this game is not Bluetooth or IR-enabled; you would be required to pass the handheld back and forth, or else play on a table where both could see the screen at once. The last game option allows you to choose the board size, from 6, 8, 10, or 12 squares on each side. The smaller board is better for younger players, or those with very short attention spans, while the larger board is great for creating longer games.

Another fun plus is the ability to change the color scheme for the pieces. The default, Psychedelic, is also the easiest one for me to see— yellow and purple pieces if you have a color handheld screen. Other choices include Classic, Aperture, and Modern. I also like the running tile counts, so you can see just how badly you’re losing the game. The totals are updated after every turn, and a box around the colored piece on the right hand side shows exactly whose turn it is at that given moment. There are also history and high score tables that can help you keep track of your progress, or lack thereof. As you can tell by the complete absence of my name from the high score table, I haven’t had a lot of luck beating the Seven Dwarves. Someday though…

Reverces if a LOT of fun, and it only requires 159K of space on your Palm OS handheld device. It supports Palm OS 3.1 and higher, including Palm OS 5. The high res graphics look absolutely stunning on my Tapwave Zodiac, but even if you have a monochrome device you can still get in on the fun. I would like to have a few more sound effects and such, but as it stands Reverces is the best Othello-type game available for Palm OS devices. You can get it for $10.95, and if you haven’t made up your mind yet there’s a free trial download available on the Handy Entertainment web site.
