Icon A Classic Icon Collection and M3 Definitive Iconset
April 11, 2003
Icon A Classic Hi Res and Low Res Complete Collections
This product is actually a composite of all of the icon collections from Icon A Classic. If you’ve tried some of the other sets and found that you really like them, purchasing the Complete collection is a great value. The Basic Collection alone, which is part of this set, contains over 750 icons. The other parts of the collection include Air Travel, Business, Chat, Family, International, and Sports (NBA, NFL, NHL, and Baseball, plus college sports) themes. All together, there are actually 3,700 icons here— the screenshot shows only a very small subset from the “Bonus” collection. And no matter what sort of icons you are looking for, they’re here: everything from cartoon characters to weather, shopping to business needs, flags, numbers, arrows, and monograms, everything you could possibly need for almost any conceivable context. And the icons themselves are simply beautiful. The developer is obviously very talented.
Of course you can’t use ALL of the icons at once, so the Icon A Classic Complete Collection also includes the freeware version of IconManager. This program allows you to load the various collections and create your own custom set of icons. This is actually the most fun part of all—I have really enjoyed creating the perfect set of icons just for me, which includes icons to mark TV shows and movies, a default icon for each of my to do categories, a couple of my favorite cartoon characters, a couple of the sports teams that I follow, holiday icons, plus a few that I liked so much that I just had to throw in, even if I won’t be using them all that often.
You can download a free sample set or become a registered user at PalmGear. The Hi Res Complete Collection is available for $16, and the Low Res Complete Collection is only $15.
M3 Definitive Iconset
This set of icons is absolutely spectacular. The full version contains over 640 icons, and is highly organized, with the various types of icons separated and named within the set. That makes particular types of icons very easy to find, but also takes up quite a bit of space, requiring you to page through several screens before finding the one you want to apply to your item. The icons themselves are very well done. One feature you may or may not like, depending on your artistic preferences, is the strong use of black in the icons, particularly in their outlines. This can be very handy if you use a lot of bold colors in DateBk5 or Agendus, since that will tend to make the icons easier to see. It also gives a heavier, darker look to the icons that you may or may not like. If not, a “light version” of icons with lighter outlines is also available. I personally prefer the light icons, but it’s always nice to have a choice. This is a very nice collection, but it gets a slightly lower score due to value— the Icon A Classic collection has six times the icons for only twice the price.
The M3 Definitive Iconset is available for purchase from PalmGear for $8.00, or you can get the light version for the same price— the only difference is which set you personally prefer.
