Nutshell Holster for the Palm Tungsten T
March 30, 2003
The Nutshell Holster really is a thing of beauty— it is crafted of leather and lined with a very soft suede material. The contrasting stitching on the sides is very well done as well. But my favorite feature is the belt clip— it is very high quality. It can accomodate a belt up to two inches wide, and the clip itself is lined to make it smooth. There’s also a d-ring at the top of the clip, so that you can attach the case to anything that happens to have a hook— either the optional shoulder strap or your own purse or pack. The device is protected and enclosed from the top by a velcro flap with a small Nutshell logo on the front. I personally would have liked a nice tab and loop closure to make for a quieter opening, but the velcro is nice too— noisy, but you don’t have to look down at the case on your belt in order to close it without “missing” the loop.
About the only thing I really don’t like about this case is that it really is TOO snug a fit at first. Leather does of course stretch with age and use, but I really didn’t like the way that the Graffiti slider on my Tungsten would get pulled open every time I tried to remove the device from the Nutshell holster. I was afraid that my device would be damaged somehow, from having to pull so strongly on the top in order to get it out. Pushing from the bottom helped a bit, but not much— it felt kinda awkward. The designer suggested that I dampen the stitching on the sides to help hasten the “breaking in” process. The Nutshell Holster also seems rather expensive, considering that it is a carrying case and not a work-through case, but then again, the materials are top notch. Your own purchase decision will have to depend on your budget.
The Nutshell Case is beautifully made and very functional. It’s rather different than your typical handheld case, and that’s a bonus. You can get one for yourself at the Nutshell web site for $39.95 plus $8 shipping, in either the belt clip or belt loop model. The optional shoulder strap is an additional $9.95.
