Tungsten T Aluminum Hard Case from Proporta
February 20, 2003
The aluminum hard case for the Tungsten T from Proporta is exceptionally well-designed. One of the general problems with handheld cases is that they don’t generally give you good access to everything you want to do with your device. I was pleasantly surprised by this case though. It is made of aluminum, and the interior is fully lined with black neoprene. It opens like a book, left to right, and the Tungsten slides in from the top. It is held in very snugly by the neoprene lining and two little “wings” on the bottom that hug the device. All of the buttons and slots are perfectly accessible— the hard buttons and the 5 way navigator on the front, the headphone jack and voice recorder button on the left side, the HotSync port on the bottom, and everything on the top of the unit as well. That means that I can plug in headphones, switch out SD cards, get my stylus, etc. without having to take my Tungsten out of the case. Unfortunately it’s not syncable in the case, unless you happen to have a sync cable. You may be wondering what to do about getting access to the Graffiti area. That isn’t so difficult— just pull up on the top of the device. There’s a handy thumb cutout at the top of the case, on the back, and if you also hold the bottom of the device, you can extend the Graffiti area while the Tungsten is in the case. Don’t worry, it’s much easier than it sounds. You shouldn’t have to do that too often though, if you have installed utilities such as NewPen and 0Key. And remember not to try it if you already have headphones plugged in— you’ll wonder why it isn’t working until you realize that the plug won’t allow the device to slide past the top of the case!
I really couldn’t find any flaws with this case. It is very well designed and constructed. It does take a little getting used to, since I used the plastic cover with my Tungsten for so long— obviously since this Proporta case isn’t clear, you can’t see the clock display as quickly as before. It is easy to open and close, but not so easy to open that the case will pop open for no reason. I have noticed that the bottom of the five way navigator is making an indentation on the neoprene lining of the front of the case, but that’s a minor detail. In all other respects, this case adds a high level of protection to your Tungsten T without adding any more bulk or weight than absolutely necessary. You can get your own at the Proporta web site for $38.00. I think you’ll be glad you did.
