Getting Ready for the Holidays

November 22, 2002

There are all sorts of things to do now that Christmas is coming ever closer— only 34 days left! You can shop, write out those Christmas cards, cook and bake your holiday favorites, make plans to visit friends and family, and decorate both your house and your handheld device. Yes, you heard the PocketGoddess right— here are some ideas for creating a little electronic holiday spirit.

The easiest place to start is with the appropriate software, and here are some of my favorites, all available at PalmGear:

  • Gift Giver 3.0, the ultimate Christmas card and gift tracker, and a real bargain too—on sale for $7.95, regularly $9.95. If you have family spread out all over the country, or just have lots of friends to buy presents for, you NEED this application now.
  • Snowboard Bob, a fun little snow-themed game. It’s part Frogger clone, part arcade skiing fun, $8
  • Christmas Countdown will be a big help the next time your kids ask you just how much longer it will be until Christmas day, freeware
  • Christmas Collection #1, a collection of MIDI Christmas Carol alarms for your Palm OS device, $5

Don’t forget too that there’s plenty of free Christmas reading available from Memoware. You’ll find everything from It’s a Wonderful Life trivia to A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Christmas recipes to lyrics to all of your favorite carols. A variety of formats are supported, and remember, it’s all free!

And then of course there’s the external decoration. You can’t go wrong with a nice PDAJacket for your m5xx series device in a lovely shade of red or green, available here. Or of course you can get a holiday-style case from SmarterCase. I’ll be using a lovely red case with gold mistletoe (or is it holly?) accents for the rest of the season. I won’t have to worry about my Tungsten getting crushed by all those holiday catalogs and packages and receipts in my bag, since it’s made out of steel. And it’s certainly festive! Just about any handheld will fit in one of the two sizes of cases offered by SmarterCase, either tightly with friction like my Tungsten (if you leave the plastic cover on, it fits perfectly, assuming that you use the SmarterCase as a slip case, rather than a work-through case) or with velcro (so that you can use it as a work-through case). Either way, you don’t have to worry about any damage to your handheld this Christmas season— unless you intend to use a broken screen or a cracked device as an excuse to upgrade to a new one!! You can get one at the SmarterCase web site.
