Case Techworks Clie NR70 Case
September 6, 2002
Their latest offering for the Sony Clie NR70 is certainly no exception. It is nicely crafted of leather, and the interior lining behind the device is made out of black fabric. The front of the case is slightly padded and has an understated Case Techworks logo. This model closes with a tab and a snap on the back, which conveniently covers the HotSync cutout. The NR70 fits into a “cradle” or “sleeve” at the bottom which gives nice access to the keyboard and holds the device securely— but it is still easy to remove for charging and Hotsyncing. There is a small cutout at the bottom that will accomodate a sync cable, if you happen to have one. On the inside flap of the case you’ll find two card holders and two Memory Stick holders. I was concerned at first about putting Memory Sticks there until I realized that each of the two spots is slightly recessed, which helps prevent them from damaging your handheld’s screen. The back of the case features well-aligned cutouts for the NR70’s speaker and the hole for the reset button.
Overall I am rather pleased with the quality of this case: the stitching is well done, and the snap closure works well. If you choose the belt clip version, be advised that this is not a “one-way” clip that can only be removed if the case is turned 90 degrees, for safety. This clip can be removed any time you depress the release button. It’s hard enough to push that it’s unlikely to come out accidentally, but there is that possibility. There is one small problem with the case though—I’ve noticed that the black fabric lining behind the device has started to “bubble up” from the leather. While this isn’t a major problem right now, it may or may not get worse over time. The other item to note is that the construction of the hinge of the case does not lend itself to folding behind the device easily. That’s great if you want to use this case as a handy stand on your desk, but could be a little annoying if you often want to flip to front over behind your Clie while accessing information.
The Sony Clie NR70 case is available from the Case Techworks web site for $39.99, or $44.99 for the belt clip version. As with all of their cases, this one is well-designed and nicely constructed. You won’t get Vaja quality, but then again you aren’t paying a Vaja price either.
