Icon A Classic
June 21, 2002
There are three collections to choose from: Basic, Sports, and Air Travel. The Basic collection includes everything from Santa Claus to ice cream cones to numbers and even a Boy Scout logo. I’m very impressed with both the quality and the selection. I can appreciate the graphical talent required to create these collections, because ActionNames includes an icon editor. I tried creating some custom icons for myself, but they didn’t turn out very well. It seems that my talents extend only so far as the written word, and I should leave the grahics to the artists and designers!
The Sports collection contents should be obvious: logos for just about every sports team you can possibly think of, and then some. That collection would be absolutely perfect for a real sports nut, because all the games and matches in the calendar can be marked with the appropriate logo. A quick glance at any time would let you know which games are coming up. The Air Travel collection is definitely aimed at the hardcore business traveler, and includes major airline logos and icons for destination cities.
Now if you already use ActionNames from iambic Software, you might be aware of one small problem: you can’t use more than one icon collection at a time. That’s where dbIcon+ comes in, a freeware utility application from the developer of DateBk5. It allows you to manage your icon collections very quickly and easily, right on the handheld itself. You can copy and paste icons between icon files and create new files as well. I can’t recommend it highly enough if you are interested in keeping some of the standard icons that come with your PIM application but also want to use the Icon A Classic collections as well. It took me only about ten minutes to combine all of the icons I want to use into one file. If you’d like a copy of dbIcon+, you can obtain a free copy here.
If you’re not quite sure that you’re ready to make a commitment, you can download sample icons from PalmGear, but I think you’ll agree that these collections are very reasonably priced indeed. The Basic collection is $4, the Sports Collection is $6, and the Air Travel Collection is $3. There’s a special introductory offer too, that allows you to purchase all three collections for a discounted price of $10. And if you like the idea of having a custom collection of icons without the hassle of editing the databases yourself with dbIcon+, that’s available as well, for a $20 fee.
