SplashShopper

March 21, 2002

There are several shopping programs out there, and of course you can always create your own with the help of a spreadsheet or database application that you may already have on your handheld. But sometimes it’s easier to use something that was designed for the purpose from the beginning. SplashShopper follows that idea by being nothing more than a shopping and checklist program, and it fulfills that purpose very well. It has two parts, a Palm OS handheld application and a desktop companion that resides on your PC. If you’re like most folks, you’ve found that it’s a whole lot easier to do the majority of your data entry on the desktop and use your handheld for quick reference while you’re on the go. That’s where SplashShopper really shines— the desktop application is very well designed and easy to use, and it serves as a perfect complement to the handheld application.

In both cases, using SplashShopper is pretty simple. It comes with some sample data to help you get up and running, though of course you will need to add in the particular items that you use. Each item has a name, an aisle, a price, a quantity field, and a coupon field. There’s also room for notes for each item, in case you’re looking for something specific. When you’re making your shopping list, simply check off the items you need and a shopping cart will appear in the first column. If you have a long list and need to find something quickly, there’s a lookup field at the bottom, left-hand side of the screen. Start entering a couple of letters in Graffiti and the list will scroll to the right spot very fast. Tap or click on the “Need” tab to see a list of everything you need to get on your next shopping trip, along with a running total at the bottom of the screen. When it comes to the actual shopping, a simple tap next to each item as you pick it up will ensure that you don’t miss a single thing.

SplashShopper isn’t just for groceries either. As you may have already noticed, there are several different types of list. The sample data that comes with the program include movies, books, and clothes— which means that SplashShopper provides a complete shopping solution. It’s easy to keep track of the things that you or your family want, including clothing sizes, so that you never have to wonder when birthdays and anniversaries come up— you’ll always know what the perfect gift should be. In other words, SplashShopper isn’t just for the ladies who tend to do the grocery shopping for the household. Guys— you can make some serious brownie points here!

It’s rather pricey at $19.95, but SplashShopper just might be worth that to you— it really is a great application that can help you better manager your household and stretch that tight budget even further by helping you to remember to use your coupons. Get it at the SplashData web site.
