SplashID

March 19, 2002

The first application we’re going to look at this week is SplashID. It’s designed to help you keep track of all of those little bits of information that float around, like email logins, passwords, bank PINs, credit card and account numbers, and the like. It has a Windows desktop component that makes data entry a breeze, or you can enter everything on your handheld. You can also import your data if you already have it in a spreadsheet, a text file, or a database that can export comma-delimited files. That means that if you’re already somewhat organized you won’t have to waste any time on double-entering your data.

The handheld application requires 100K of space, plus the actual data file, which should be pretty small. I really like the way that SplashID automatically configures each entry for maximum efficiency once you enter the category. If you enter an email address for example, it prompts you for a login, password, Pop3 server address, etc. With six custom fields for each entry, plus a notes area, you’ll be sure that you can enter all of the necessary details and keep everything in one place. You can also add an icon to each entry that makes it easy for you to find whatever information you need in a flash. And of course your data is password protected on both the desktop and the handheld so you don’t have to worry about sensitive information falling into the wrong hands.

While SplashID might not be a necessary purchase if you already have a Palm OS database application like HanDBase, JFile, etc., it is perfect for anyone who has a lot of personal information they’d like to keep in one place. With the increasing technology of our age comes a dizzying array of network and website logins, passwords, and PINs. Remember when a driver’s license number and maybe your Social Security was enough? If that seems like an all-too-distant memory for you, do yourself a favor and give SplashID a try. A free trial is available, or you you purchase your own copy for $19.95 at the SplashData web site.
