Mondo Pondo
February 11, 2002
Needless to say, the PocketGoddess chose the PG-rated version and had a lot of fun with several of my friends. The concept behind Mondo Pondo is quite simple, though the scoring system is a little weird. Once installed to your Palm, it plays like a typical party game— choose the number of players, enter their names, and the fun beings. Mondo Pondo is a trivia game with questions of average difficulty. Nothing too frustrating, but if you aren’t fairly well-read and well-versed in popular culture, you’ll find them something of a challenge. Answer your question right and you get a “Pond” but if you answer it wrong you have the choice of telling a “truth” or performing a “dare.”
It’s the dares that make this game much more interesting than you might think. There’s just something a little more daring in having to accept whatever dare the game cooks up for you, instead of the players having to think of their own. And I’ve been told that this is where the “adult” version kicks in, but the PocketGoddess doesn’t have any personal experience on this point. In the tamer version, the dares included animal impersonations, singing, dancing, and other silliness. The truths were along similar lines, fairly tame but with a few friendship tests thrown in. For example, one player might have to choose which one of the others to “sacrifice” if a bunch of bandits burst into the room threatening to shoot all of you unless one is chosen.
All in all Mondo Pondo is a fun, fast-paced game for one or more players. You can purchase a license for $20 from the Mondo Pondo web site. If you want something a little off the beaten path, something like “Trivial Pursuit” with a twist, this just might be the game for you.
