Serious Sam

December 20, 2001

Serious Sam is a first person shooter, which means that though there is a good storyline that goes along with the game, the basic premise is really to shoot everything that moves. Shoot first, ask questions later. If you aren’t sure, shoot again. You get the idea. It’s a lot of fun when you’re looking for a nice diversion, but watch out— this game is really challenging. Thankfull there are three difficulty levels that you can select, so that the game isn’t too frustrating. You control your character with the hard keys on the front of your device, and tap your stylus in the Graffiti area when necessary to change weapons. Trust me, it isn’t as complicated as it sounds, but you do need a very fast trigger finger as the monsters in this game are pretty tough.

You’ll also need plenty of room on your Palm OS handheld, as Serious Sam required 2.5MB of space. You heard right, 2.5 MB. If you have one of the newer models with an expansion card, you can store the game itself on the card, saving 500K of system memory, though the 2MB worth of game database must be stored in main memory unless you use one of the shareware VFS memory managers. That huge database is what’s required for all of the graphics in the game, which are many and varied. While they aren’t as good as some of the other games available for the Palm OS platform, they are on a par with what you would have seen in the original versions of Wolfenstein & Doom on the PC.

Serious Sam is a lot of fun, especially if you are a fan of this genre of games. If you aren’t a big Doom or Wolfenstein fan though, you might want to stick with the Shooting Gallery package that I reviewed earlier this week. That package offers several shooting games that are a little more accessible to the beginning player. Serious Sam is available from the Global Star Software web site for $19.99.
