The FlexiSkin is an excellent case option for many reasons–it offers a good amount of protection from scratches and bumps while still allowing you to access your device immediately, without having to open a flap, unzip a zipper, etc. It also enhances the feel of your device with a smooth surface that is easy to grip, reduces hand fatigue because it “gives” just a bit, and also prevents your device from sliding on a slick or slightly sloped surface. Boxwave recently released their new FlexiSkin case for the Game Boy Micro, and I really like what I see.
The case almost completely covers the Game Boy Micro, except for the screen of course, and cutouts that provide access to the d-pad and face buttons, headphone jack, etc. The openings are perfectly sized, though you will see quite a bit of the area of the faceplate surrounding the d-pad area, which can look a bit strange if you have a pink skin for example, and a camo faceplace on your Micro, as I do. The FlexiSkin case fits very well, but is still easy to install/remove from the device since it is rather flexible as the name suggests. You can freely change game cartridges, since that area is left open just like the screen. The texture of the skin is smooth and soft, not slick or tacky, and I find that I actually prefer the feel of it instead of a “naked” device. On the back there are many small bumps or nubs, on both the left and right sides, which enhance the grip.
There’s just one small problem–the cost is substantially higher than a very similar product, the Pelican Gel Skin for Game Boy Micro, which is currently available for just $4.95 at J&R Computer and comes with a small screen cleaning pad on a lanyard attachment. While the overall quality of the Boxwave product is definitely superior due to the better materials used, I’m not sure it will be worth an extra $8 to the average gamer. Of course with Boxwave you can actually choose your color, whereas you get a random case when you order yours from J&R. One other thing to keep in mind–you truly do get what you pay for. I know that it’s an old saying, but that doesn’t make it any less true. Before I got the BoxWave FlexiSkin, I used a Pelican Gel Skin for several months. It shows in the small tear between the A and B buttons, and in the dust that I simply can’t get off the surface of the case, no matter how much I try to clean it off. The FlexiSkin is much thicker, and the overall texture is smoother as well so that it doesn’t attract as much lint and dust.
The BoxWave FlexiSkin for Game Boy Micro is $12.95 and is available in your choice of pink, blue, light gray, smoke gray, or frosted clear. You can order one at the BoxWave online store.
