Logitech PlayGear Pocket for Sony PSP

by PocketGoddess on June 11, 2005

The PlayGear Pocket is made of high-impact clear plastic with a black foam lining. The design is rather hip and cool, with the clear plastic matching the shoulder trigger buttons on the PSP. The branding is rather understated, wtih a small Logitech logo on the front of the case. There’s a cutout on the back so that you can see the PSP logo on the back of the device, and you’ll also see molded handgrips that are supposed to make the case easier and more comfortable to hold. Other cutouts provide access to the power switch, charging port, and lanyard attachment point.

At the top of the case you’ll find a rather large hinge; for this reason the case isn’t particularly pocketable. That hinge does do one great thing for the case, however–it’s stiff enough that you can fold the cover of the case over the top and behind, which props the PSP up at a perfect viewing angle for watching movies.
The case is secured with a push clasp on the bottom edge; push it in to release the latch and open the case. I found it rather difficult to open, mainly because the case is a little slippery. I had to hold the bottom of the case in one hand and use my thumb to push in the catch, then use my other hand to try and pry apart the edges of the case. While I don’t think there’s much worry about the case accidentally coming open in your bag, or if you drop it, I think the case could still be a bit easier to open.
The design of the PlayGear Pocket is such that you can play games with the PSP while it is in the case, though if you have small hands you may not want to do so. It’s heavier than an aluminum case, adds a lot of bulk to the PSP, and is slippery too. If your hands get sweaty during extended gaming sessions, I wouldn’t recommend this case. On the plus side, it is easy to customize this case; you can insert a paper liner between the interior foam and the clear plastic exterior. I’ve already seen one great example on the web– the prince from Katamari Damacy.
This case has gotten stellar reviews on almost every web site out there, but it may not be the best case for your Sony PSP if you’re looking for something ultra-portable or have small hands. The PlayGear Pocket adds quite a bit of bulk and isn’t as protective as some less expensive options out there, since there are several cutouts and openings on the sides and corners of the case.
The Logitech PlayGear Pocket is available now for $19.99 at the Logitech web site and authorized retailers.
