Scribble Aluminum Case for the Palm m505

by PocketGoddess on February 13, 2002

Let me start by saying that I simply love this case, and it’s my new everyday companion. For the money, I honestly don’t think that you’re going to do much better than this little guy. FOr starters, it has the smallest possible dimensions in every direction, so the slim size advantage offered by the m505 isn’t completely destroyed. All of the edges on my sample case were completely smooth, and the interior of the case is lined with a smooth sheet of neoprene, both front and back. I much prefer this to the fuzzy material inside some other cases. And there are button cutouts on the bottom of the front part of the case that help ensure that the device doesn’t get turned on accidentally.

The latch itself is rather clever. It fits very tightly, but it is also rather easy to “pry” open by pressing on it with one thumb while using the other thumb at the top close to the stylus silo cutout. You may also notice from the picture that there is another cutout at the top that allows access to the SD slot. I don’t feel that this is really necessary (as you can freely access the back of the Palm while it is attached to the case), and it makes me worry a little more about possibly losing my card. But it is a convenience and it also allows beaming. That’s right– even though the entire IR port is not exposed, it evidently doesn’t have to be, as my laptop was able to communicate perfectly with my Palm while it was in this case laying on my desk. And after talking with a company representative I feel better about this particular design decision, as it will accomodate oversized SD cards in the future, like Bluetooth and the rumored digital camera accessory, etc.

The device itself is secured by a rail in the left-hand silo, as is common with a lot of cases for V/Vx/m50x series handhelds. This means that you never have to take your Palm out of the case. It may require a little juggling to get the Palm in its cradle or to attach it to a USB charge & sync cable or emergency charger, but the point is that you can. It’s even possible, though more problematic of course, to use it with a PPK while it is the case. I find it easier to just take it out myself, but you never know!

About the only thing lacking is a spot for either SD cards or a business card, though of course that’s understandable as that would add some bulk to the case. So if it weren’t for that SD slot cutout, the new aluminum case from ScribblePDA would get my prestigious “5 goddess” rating. As it stands though, the score is quite respectable, and this PocketGoddess is indeed using this case every day. You can get one for about $30 (the exchange rate makes an exact price difficult to determine) at the ScribblePDA web site.

PocketGoddess rating for Chameleon Hard Case: 4.5 out of 5
