So What’s On My Palm, Part 3: Games

by PocketGoddess on November 7, 2001

We all know that Palm OS devices can definitely help organize our time and our lives, but we also know that sometimes those odd moments of wasted time standing in line at the post office or the grocery store are best spent playing a game on your handheld. I’ve included a selection of the games that have earned a permanent spot on my m505. Enjoy!

  • Ababall is an example of just how good a Palm OS game can be. Sure, it’s another Breakout clone, but the graphics and gameplay are phenomenal. It comes in both color and greyscale versions. Shareware

  • AcidFreecell & AcidSolitaire are two excellent implementations of good old-fashioned one-player card games. Both feature excellent graphics and nice extra features like detailed stats, double-tap to move (instead of dragging), and cool sound effects you can turn off if you like. Shareware

  • Astron is a super little Galaga clone. It’s pretty simple, with monochrome graphics, but that doesn’t detract from the high “fun factor” in this game– it’ll turn you into a button-mashing fool! Shareware

  • HMaki is just about my all-time favorite. The key is to remove as many blocks as you can, in the greatest quantities in order to achieve the highest score. The hope is that you’ll be able to clear the screen completely, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. And HMaki has been known to make me run my battery down more than once. Postcardware

  • Patience is a rare gem- a complete package of Solitaire-style games that also happens to be freeware. Monochrome graphics, but you can’t beat the price! Freeware

  • Plumb may bring back memories for some of you– it’s a clone of that old game where you have to line up the pipes in order to provide a pathway for the goo. When the goo runs out of the pipe, the level is over. You can score bonus points if you get the pipes to cross over each other. Shareware

  • Reptoids is another familiar game that looks a lot like Asteroids. It’s a lot of fun and highly addicting. Freeware

  • Robot Attack! is a puzzle/strategy game in which you have to avoid the robots that are coming ever near to “Exterminate” you; this is a Palm OS implementation of Daleks on the PC. Freeware.

  • Salvo is a Battleship-style game for the Palm OS, in which you play against the Palm to see who can sink all of their opponent’s ships first. Freeware

  • SpaceWar is an ingenious space combat game with a Star Trek theme. Travel around the galaxy and improve your rank by defeating your enemies in battle, including the Klingons and the Borg. A great strategy game with just the right difficulty level– not too hard in the beginning, but watch out when you progress to multiple opponents! Freeware

  • Top Race is a cute little racing game that will really keep you on your toes. It’s quick to play and a lot of fun, but watch out for those oil slicks! Shareware

  • Vexed is another classic puzzle game for the Palm. Be careful though– it’s pretty hard, and you won’t want to go back to work after you get started. Each level presents a tricky new problem to solve, with the object of the game being to eliminate all of the pieces. You can move them, but since they’re subject to gravity you have to plan ahead. Freeware
That should be enough to keep you busy for a while!
